Symmetry by rhythmic movements 2001 Two robots jointly produce pictures. One robot holds paper on a wooden surface like an easel while the other robot sprays it with different colors. The motifs are spirographs - regular patterns built up from the mathematical infinity symbol (8), which is sprayed repeatedly so that the centers are laying on a circle. During the process the color changes. By varying the diameter of the circle and the size of the symbol three dimensional effects and vibrating patterns emerge. The infinity symbol stands for the endless uniform movements, which are executed by the robots during their daily work in the industry. During the image production the robots work together skillfully. The sprayer monotonously performs the trajectories of the infinity symbol while the easel robot repositions the paper again and again with small rotations, resulting in the spirograph. 'spirograph' was developed as a commission and presented on the 500qm stand of the KUKA Roboter GmbH. From April 23-28, 2001 at the world's largest industrial fair Hannovermesse. The installation there consisted on five different robot types. A high payload robot and a pallet robot took and laid out a large amout of paper. The easel robot took one sheet and produced spirograph. After the spraying process a small robot signed the artwork by hand. 29/01/2002 | |
