Robot dance performance
2000

On July 7, 2000 robotlab performs the music show 'in memoriam Gene Kelly' in the main foyer of the town hall in Karlsruhe. The performer is a industrial robot arm with an umbrella in his hand. He chooses his music from the ghetto blaster which is situated in front of him. He dances in the center of a round carpet and opens and closes his umbrella automatically and suitably to accentuate his movements with the music. The title 'in memoriam Gene Kelly' commemorates the well-known entertainer. His famous song 'Singing in the Rain' was used as the prelude of the show which consisted of 9 songs and choreographies.

'in memoriam Gene Kelly' was presented on the occasion of the stockholders' meeting of the IWKA (Industriewerke Karlsruhe- Augsburg). Before the musical part the 600 stock owners were welcomed by the robot with a moving video camera which showed the entering persons from the robot's perspective on a big projection screen.

The IWKA is the former owner of the Hallenbau A, the old industrial building which now harbors the ZKM | Center of Art and Media Karlsruhe.
